Why Tulum? The Ancient Rhythms Behind Our Second Retreat Destination

Where Maya history, sacred cenotes, and the natural world create an extraordinary setting for reflection and renewal — April 4–10, 2027

A Landscape With a Story Far Older Than Ours

Along Mexico's Caribbean coast, where turquoise waters meet limestone cliffs and tropical jungle, Tulum occupies a landscape shaped by thousands of years of natural and human history. Once an important Maya trading center, the ancient walled city stands above the sea and its surviving temples offer a glimpse into an ancient civilization whose understanding of the world was deeply connected to nature, astronomy, and the passage of time.

The city's earlier name, Zamá, means dawn; an appropriate name for a place overlooking the rising sun. Today, the Tulum archaeological site remains one of the most recognized landmarks of the Riviera Maya, but its cultural significance extends far beyond the ruins.

Throughout the Yucatán Peninsula, an extensive network of underground rivers and freshwater cenotes reveals another dimension of the region's remarkable geography. Formed over thousands of years as water shaped the porous limestone, these natural pools were essential to life in the region and for the ancient Maya, some held profound ceremonial and spiritual significance.

It is this convergence of extraordinary natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a landscape that invites contemplation that first drew us to Tulum as Moonwake Retreats' second destination.

But for me, the connection began long before Moonwake existed.

A Personal Connection to the Healing Power of Water

I began traveling to Tulum after losing my father. During a period when life felt particularly uncertain, I found myself returning to the Caribbean coast, drawn by its natural beauty and the chance to step away from the demands of everyday life.

As a lifelong water athlete and a water sign (Scorpio!), I've always felt a powerful connection to the ocean. From competitive swimming and water polo to open-water swimming, water is where I feel most present and where I find the greatest clarity.

In Tulum, that relationship took on a new meaning.

The simplicity of time near the ocean, swimming in salt water, and allowing days to unfold without a rigid schedule became an important part of how I navigated grief. There was no single practice or experience responsible for that shift, it was the combination of environment, water, and the freedom to slow down.

Those visits shaped my understanding of what a truly restorative experience can be. Healing doesn't always happen through structured activities or dramatic breakthroughs. Sometimes it begins when we step outside our routines long enough to hear ourselves think and feel again.

That philosophy became central to Moonwake.

The Art of Slowing Down in Tulum

Beyond its beaches and archaeological treasures, Tulum offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to reconnect with a more natural rhythm.

While the destination has grown in popularity, quieter stretches of coast and jungle still feel distinctly removed from everyday urgency. Open-air spaces, tropical gardens, fresh coastal air, and the changing light create an environment where slowing down feels less like an activity and more like a natural response to your surroundings.

Research increasingly supports what many travelers already sense: time in nature can reduce perceived stress, support psychological well-being, and encourage greater presence. But the appeal of Tulum isn't limited to what research can measure. The atmosphere is something many visitors experience in a deeply personal way.

For me, Tulum has an undeniable spiritual energy, not something that needs to be defined through a particular belief system, but a sense of connection that emerges from being immersed in a landscape with such a powerful relationship to the elements.

The ocean. The cenotes. The jungle. The warmth of the sun. The changing rhythms of day and night.

This is the environment we wanted to share with our guests.

Ancient Rhythms: The Moonwake Tulum Retreat Experience

Our Tulum retreat, Ancient Rhythms, brings Moonwake's signature Five Element Method to the Riviera Maya — April 4–10, 2027.

Water, Air, Fire, Earth, and Stardust serve as the foundation for a thoughtfully designed journey combining nature immersion, reflective practices, intentional community, and personal growth.

The landscape itself becomes part of the experience. Guests explore freshwater cenotes, participate in guided movement and breathwork, gather for meaningful conversations, and experience ceremonial traditions facilitated by local practitioners.

Equally important is the space between these activities.

At Moonwake, we recognize that personal transformation is not a standardized process. Some guests will feel drawn to every workshop. Others will find their most meaningful moments in quiet reflection, time alone in nature, or an unhurried conversation. Participation is always an invitation — never an expectation.

We are also committed to approaching the region's cultural traditions with genuine respect, recognizing that the practices and knowledge of local Maya communities deserve thoughtful engagement rather than appropriation or simplification.

Why This Destination Matters to Moonwake

Choosing Tulum was both a strategic and deeply personal decision.

From a retreat-design perspective, the region offers an extraordinary combination of natural environments, cultural experiences, and spaces built for reflection. Its cenotes, Caribbean coastline, tropical jungle, and rich Maya heritage make it an ideal setting for exploring the themes of our Five Element Method.

On a personal level, Tulum represents something more.

It was one of the places that helped me understand the value of creating space during a difficult chapter of life. My experiences there reinforced a belief that now shapes everything at Moonwake: meaningful change doesn't always require us to push harder, do more, or seek another version of ourselves.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is change our environment, slow our pace, and allow ourselves to reconnect with what we already know.

We chose Tulum because it offers that possibility in a setting unlike anywhere else we've experienced.

As we prepare to welcome guests to Ancient Rhythms, I'm especially excited to share a place that has meant so much to me, not with the expectation that others will experience it exactly as I have, but with the hope that they'll discover what this extraordinary destination has to offer them.

This is not a retreat about becoming someone new. It is an invitation to remember who you are.
